2010 Trailer Ministry

Documenting the Journey

Blanket Distribution

Posted by Bruce Collins On July - 10 - 2010

About a week ago we got a call from Gareth Simpson, the Pastor of Lambert road Baptist Church in Durban on South Africa’s East Coast.  Gareth’s church was also involved in outreach over the 2010 World Cup.  The residents of a local informal settlement in Durban – The Kennedy Road Settlement – faced a terrifying fire in July which destroyed many shacks and left people homeless, cold & destitute.  Gareth asked if we could donate some of the blankets that had been sourced for Trailer Ministry.  We were able to give them over 500 blankets

Gareth sent us (and others who had helped) the following thank you and pictures:

To all who assisted in the donation, delivery and distribution of over four tons of blankets, bedding, and clothing for the Kennedy Road Settlement, I would like to express my sincere appreciation.  The distribution was performed efficiently and equitably by some very capable community leaders on 9 July 2010.  It was wonderful to see that while we were involved in our distribution the Housing Department was providing building materials for the community, and some other Durbanites arrived with five or six huge pots of hot biryani which they served to the community members on paper plates.

Please find attached some photos of the fire damage (that occurred on 3 July 2010 which levelled about 200 shacks to the ground, killing 7 people) and the distribution of blankets, bedding and clothing six days later.

Kind regards, with thanks,

Gareth Simpson
